You've heard of the Legend of Paul Bunyan? Well, Beals has its own legend famous throughout Maine. The Legend of Tall Barney Beal. There is even a restaurant across the bridge in Jonesport named after Tall Barney. He was born in 1835. The fisherman was nearly 7 feet tall and weighed 300 pounds, although you'll hear differing stories on his physical traits and extraordinary feats of strength.

Located just across Moosabec Reach from Jonesport, the island is accessed via the Jonesport-Beals Bridge.
