With two large blueberry plants and plenty of blueberry barrens, Cherryfield is known as "The Blueberry Capital of the World." But there is more to Cherryfield than blueberry crops. Some of the prettiest sites in Maine are located in this town and surrounding area. The Narraguagus River winds its way through town with it's fast running waters bubbling over rocks and attracting all sorts of wildlife. Bald eagles, herons, moose, deer, bears, racoons, beavers, huge snapping turles, and much more are plentiful. There was a time not long ago when Atlantic salmon were also plentiful and flyfishing was a popular sport at the scenic cable pool near the railroad bridge. The salmon are now rare and protected, but hopefully one day they will return to lay their eggs once again..
There is a bandstand in the middle of town where the Cherryfield Band practices and holds concerts in the summertime. Autumn is like magic in Cherryfield. For many it seems Maine's colorful fall foliage is more brilliant in Cherryfield than anywhere else. Cherryfield was first settled in 1757 by Ichabod Willey and Samuel Colson. The town has a rich history of lumber mills, ship building, manufacturing, and silver mining. Today, the lumber mills may be gone, but their byproducts are still evident. There are many homes along the Narraguagus River in Cherryfield and Milbridge that were built from the mills' lumber that drifted down river.
