Jonesboro was originally named Chandler's River after one of its earliest settlers, Judah Chandler. Later it was renamed Jonesborough in honor of John C. Jones, one of a group of men granted the area by Massachusetts. Somewhere along the way it lost a few letters.

The town is located just west of Machias and at the head of Mason Bay. Besides the bay, Chandler River and blueberry barrens are dsitinctive features of Jonesboro.

Gazing across the sprawling barrens and fields it is not uncommon to see a family of deer, or a moose or bear looking for food. Eagles, gulls, woodpeckers, bluejays, and dozens of other bird species adorn the skies and tree branches.
