Traveling downeast from Ellsworth on U.S. Route 1, Steuben is the first Washington County town you enter. Heavily wooded along the highway, there is much more to the community when you explore the town roads. Blueberry barrens, fishing piers, rocky shores and much more give the town character and charm.

Settled in 1760 and incorporated in 1795, the town was named after the famed German soldier, Baron Von Steuben, who helped the colonists during the Revolutionary War.

During the 1800's Steuben was host to grist mills and mining companies, and most residents worked in farming, lumbering, fishing and other maritime endeavors. Lobster fishing and agriculture are still a big part of Steuben's way of life.

Scene at Petit Manan National Wildlife Refuge
Steuben is host to the Maine Coastal Islands National Wildlife Refuge (formerly called the Petit Manan National Wildlife Refuge). Hiking trails, miles of pristine shoreline and a wide variety of seabirds and other animals are on the refuge.
